By taking an animal who is already in SICSA's custody, you will help to clear kennel space for more animals to be brought into our care.

Our neonatal fosters care for puppies 0 days to 5 weeks old, as well as pregnant/nursing dogs and their puppies. Experience is not required. Additional training will be provided for Bottle Baby foster volunteers, prior to taking home their first litter. Please select all options that interest you.

Our weaned puppy foster’s care for puppies 5 weeks to 12 weeks old until they are eligible for their spay/neuter surgeries. Please note- In most cases, foster volunteers are required to take home at least 2 puppies at a time. In some cases, we get in single puppies without a litter, but this does not happen often.

Our medical foster's care for dogs/puppies receiving medical treatments and/or recovering from surgical procedures. More commonly, these are dogs/puppies recovering from upper respiratory infections(doggy colds), dogs/puppies recovering from surgical procedures like a broken leg, or dogs who need therapeutic treatments to stabilize an ongoing condition, like allergies, hyperthyroidism etc. This list includes our most common needs but is not all inclusive. Any and all medications/treatments are provided by SICSA. Please select all that apply.

Ringworm is a fungal infection affecting the skin, hair and occasionally nails of animals (and people). It manifests itself generally on the head, around the eyes, ears, feet and tail in round areas of hair loss that are rough and scaly. It is NOT a worm, as the name may lead you to believe. In fact, it is very closely related to Athlete’s Foot found commonly in humans. While it is a zoonotic infection – meaning it can be passed between species – it most commonly affects young animals and those with suppressed immune systems. Foster volunteers are crucial in helping SICSA care for these animals. If treated in the shelter, these animals need to be quarantined, typically spending 4-8 weeks in a kennel with limited interaction with staff. In a foster home, these animals get to enjoy love and companionship during their treatment. Foster volunteers will need a separate area to keep their animals that is easy to disinfect without carpeting. All supplies needed for treatment will be provided by SICSA. Animals positive for ringworm need fungal cultures every 2 weeks, and need 2 consecutive negative results to clear and return to SICSA.

Heartworm foster volunteers care for dogs who are going through treatment for heartworms. The treatment consists of oral antibiotics, and two injections given by our vet. The dog will need strict crate rest for 2-4 weeks following the injections. Heartworms are NOT contagious to people or other dogs, and are only spread through contact with an infected mosquito.

Our behavior Foster's care for dogs/puppies that need some additional socialization or behavior work before being adopted. This can include undersocialized dogs/puppies, dogs exhibiting signs of kennel stress who need a break from the kennel, and dogs who have a behavior issue that needs training. Behavior issues can range from basic leash and house manners to more advanced issues like separation anxiety. Experience working with behavior issues is not required. Our kennel manager will work with our behavior fosters to come up with a behavior plan to help these animals get ready for adoption. Please select all options that interest you.

Our Safe Pets Program provides temporary housing for animals whose owners are going through a rough time. Most of the people we help, are those who are either in danger of, or have already become homeless, or victims leaving a domestic violence situation. We provide temporary housing for their animals, allowing them time to seek help through other organizations and to find alternatives to surrender. We have two types of Safe Pet agreements, a transitional agreement and a reunification agreement. Transitional agreements, which are most common, range from 2 weeks to 60 days maximum, and is mainly to allow the owner time to find an alternative solution to surrender. Foster volunteers who take on a transitional safe pet, agree to house their foster pets for 2 weeks at a time. Every 2 weeks, you will get the option to “Re-Up” your time for another 2 weeks, until the end of the agreement. If you are unavailable, the animal is returned to SICSA or sent to another foster home. Reunification agreements do not have a clear end date. In these cases, SICSA agrees to temporarily house their animal until such time when the owner is able to take them back, as long as we have a foster volunteer available. Some transitional agreements become reunification agreements, depending on the foster volunteers availability. If at the end of an agreement time the owner is unable to reclaim their animals, they are surrendered to SICSA and put up for adoption. Foster volunteers in this program must agree to keep all information confidential regarding their foster pets situation.
